Big World...Little Bee
The little bumble bee has played a huge role in our world right from the
very beginning.  If you ever watch a bumble bee, you will be amazed at
what a quick and thorough job they perform. Bumble bees are unique in
that they don’t lose their stingers when they sting something, unlike the
honey bee.  Also, unlike other bees, bumble bees are active even in cooler
weather which enables them to help with pollination very early in the
spring.  Consequently, without the bumble bee, many plants on our planet
would not be able to reproduce and their specie would become extinct.
Without all of those plants, animals that depend on them would starve and
perish.  We depend on many of those animals for our food supply as well as
on many of the plants that bumble bees pollinate.  As it turns out, the
bumble bee, which was once thought to be a flight phenomenon (according
to science), actually has an enormous responsibility in the bigger scheme
of things.

The Buzz
The buzz is that the bumble bee can in fact fly. It was just the science
and accepted theory of the time which claimed it should be impossible.
The theory, based on the mathematical equation by Andre Sainte-Lague, an
engineer, was written about in a 1934 book by entomologist Antoine
Magnan.   The equation proved that the maximum lift for an aircraft’s wings
could not be achieved at equivalent speeds of a bee.  Therefore, an
airplane the size of a bumble bee, moving as slowly as a bee, could not fly.
Even though the science behind the theory never prevented the bumble
bee from actually being successful in flight, the ideas shared by Sainte-
Lague and Magnan, with reference to how bumble bees shouldn’t be able to
fly, still spread.  And, the funny thing is, the legend of the flight
phenomenon that defies science remains popular even today.
The buzz is that the bumble bee is still flying today with the very same
efficiency that it’s had right from the beginning.  The dynamics of the
bumble bee really do work contrary to the accepted science and theory of
the past.   And in the mean time, the determined bumble bee, as
illustrated by Dawn Matheson, had the courage to do what seemed
impossible at the time, and just kept on flying, believing,  that science
would catch up to it sooner or later.

Science Gets The Buzz
Now, science better understands the bee and why it can fly.  The bumble
bee is not like an airplane; it is more like a helicopter.  Their wings work on
the same principle as helicopter blades do, with reverse-pitch semi-rotary
blades, to be precise. A moving airfoil, whether it is a helicopter blade or
the wing of a bumble bee, can generate a lot more lift than a stationary
one.
The real challenge for science over time in understanding the flight of the
bumble bee has not been in figuring out the aerodynamics of flight, but in
figuring out the mechanics of flight.   Today, science now knows that the
bumble bee’s wings can move very fast, roughly 200 beats per second,
which is 10 or 20 times the firing rate of neurons in the nervous system.
Another discovery is that the wing muscles don’t actually expand and
contact; they vibrate like rubber-bands.  A single nerve impulse signals the
wing muscle to vibrate the wings up and down a few times until the next
impulse occurs.

The Buzz Prevails
Despite the early scientific theory that a bumble bee’s body is far too big
for its little wings, and shouldn’t be able to fly, bumble bees conquered
what seemed impossible at the time and in doing so became a motivational
legend. It is just that the bumble bee was ahead of its time, being a flight
phenomenon.  The bumble, as described by author Dawn Matheson,
knew it could fly because it bee-lieved in the divine engineer that
specifically considered the aerodynamics of the bumble bee, even
before modern science could understand it. All that was needed was for
science to catch up to the bumble bee.   Sometimes, that is all it ever takes
with anything, because in time, all things come to light.
The bumble bee was truly cutting edge technology right from the
beginning. The bumble bee flew when early science stated that
aerodynamically it couldn’t.  The bumble bee carried on its place in the
world’s system and just kept going despite the science of the time stating
that it shouldn’t be able to fly.  The bumble is truly a phenomenon of
nature.  In the end, as with so many things in this world, we learn to
appreciate and accept more as advancements in science bring those things
to light.
